The play ‘ Golpay Ja Nei’ created ripples this evening, at the jam-packed Rabindra Bhawan despite a sluggish – paced first half
Kolkata based Gateway Wing presented the play, held under the patronage of Fatakgora Jaggadharti Puja Committee.
AUDIENCE’S STRAY REACTION IN INTERMISSION:
On intermission, as I came out, I overheard whispering voices from some audiences, calling it ‘ lingering time’, never expected… etc.
MY OWN FEELING IN INTERMISSION:
But, I, a novice in drama/theatre, neverthless, was enjoying it as the play never drove me to scratch my brain to get into the intellectuality , it was a simply a story based but argueably lenghthy.
POST INTERMISSION:
Well, the bell rang back and came the second half. Suddenly the play moved with a zooming pace after the entry of young , @Rwitabroto Mukherjee, the son of the protagonist Dr Nandi (Meghnad Bhattacharya). A murder of lady nurse in Halishahar) changed the equation of the play. The story picked up the motion.
THE STORY BEGINS: Golpay Ja Nei
The protagonist Dr Nandi was a retired government surgeon and a retired morgue doctor. The doctor during the service in a rural area gave a clean chit in the postmortem report to the accused of an adivasi girl died of rape, apparently under the pressure of a big wig.
The doctor had a relationship outside his marriage with the murderd nurse. He had been threatened of blackmailing about disclosure of his illicit relationship with the (murderd later) nurse of Halisahar’ if he, refused to endorsed the false, postmortem report
The protagonist doctor’s wife, died in grief having been deprived of love from her doctor husband .
CLIMAX STARTS AND PLOT THICKENS:
After the murder of doctor’s lover, his son brought a diary of his father’s lover, ‘the dead nurse of Halisahar’ and the diary spilled the beans.
The diary revealed the fake postmortem report by the doctor during his posting in a rural adivasi area and the doctor was also jailed.
Shankar babu (Shantilal Mukherjee) who posed as doctor’s friend and a suspense story writer was living in disguise. He was actually a detective police officer.
The diary disclosed that Shankar babu as a police officer hastily cremated the raped and killed Adivasi girl, apparently to hush up the matter.
The lid was blown off and the doctor now, felt breathless in the suffocative plot. The cook cum servant (Chandan Sen)of the doctor was the father of the dead Adivashi girl.
The cook after his daughter was raped and killed, felt his life too in danger. So, to get rid of it, he faked his own death and lived in disguise as a cook under the garb of a fake Adhar Card carrying a fake address. The detective police officer identified him.
The police officer in disguise of Shankar babu came to nab him (cook cum servant) on the ground of fake Adhar Card, but the situation was different. The police officer was involved in the case. He knew, he would likely get trapped for cremating the raped girl in haste, to hush up the matter.
So, the police officer tried to shot the cook down, but the doctor’s son caught in the cross fire, and died.
With this, the play ended, bringing down the curtain.
MY ANALYSIS
Interststingly almost all the characters on the stage came under the loop of the crime.
All the characters of the play are theatre legend and need no discussion on their acting potential.
Shantilal Bhattacharya as a retired doctor and protagonist kept the audience in excitement, his dialogue delivery raised excitement of varying degree.
The simplicity of acting of Chandan Sen was a highlight to mention.
@highlight @Rwitobroto Mukherjee was a great changer who turned the face of the play from trend of dullness in the first half, to excitement and thrill in the second half.
Stage craft was simple but tasteful. Light and sound was distinct.
The audience left with a note of satisfaction. Ujjal Chaterjee playwright was fair enough but a bit of monotony, in the first- half.
The play had the elements of satire, humour, thrill, suspense, illicit love, corruption. The play drew scary parrallels of recent RG Kar Medical college episode.
ABOUT INAUGURATION
Earlier, inaugurating the program by lighting the traditional lamp, Chandan Sen, greeted the Chandannagar inhabitants for keeping up its rich history & cultural heritage and called upon them to continue the innovations in thought process.
